Canon imagePROGRAF TM-200 vs. HP DesignJet T520

Canon Europe commissioned Keypoint Intelligence – Buyers Lab to produce a report looking at the relative strengths and weaknesses of the Canon imagePROGRAF TM-200 versus HP’s DesignJet T520. Specific tests were conducted to compare the performance in image quality, productivity, banner and poster printing, ink consumption and more.

All testing was performed in Buyers Lab’s European test facility in Wokingham, UK.

The 24-inch five-colour Canon imagePROGRAF TM-200 is targeted to small design studios and in Buyers Labs’s evaluation it outshone the HP DsignJet T520 in most aspects. This included superior image quality, higher productivity, lower ink consumption and richer device and driver feature sets. Overall the TM-200’s productivity was superb, whether printing from a ready state or from a jobstream.

Image quality produced by both large format printers tested would quite easily satisfy expectations of customers in the architectural, engineering and construction (AEC), computer aided design (CAD) and geographic information systems (GIS) markets. The Canon TM-200 excelled with a finer level of print detail in both colour and black photographic images, more natural skin tones, a wider gamut of colours and crisper text with no bleed. The TM-200 also provided lower ink consumption if all three tests performed.

Regarding device and driver feature sets, the Canon TM-200 again offers plenty of advantages over the HP model.

  • Higher cartridge capacities
  • Higher memory to aid with job processing
  • Smaller ink drop sizes
  • More media profiles
  • Flexible layout nesting option

It also has a unidirectional feature to eliminate banding on image output even when printing in Fast mode.

In conclusion, the Canon TM-200 is judged to be the stronger performer with superior productivity, more efficient use of ink and an excellent overall image quality in Buyers Labs’s large format printer evaluation.
