Canon Europe commissioned a report to be produced by Buyers Lab to look at the relative strengths and weaknesses of the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-4100 versus HP’s DesignJet Z9+. Specific tests were conducted to compare image quality, productivity, banner printing quality, ink consumption, direct print submission functionality, cleaning routines and more. The results are below and demonstrated that the Canon PRO-4100 outperformed the HP Z9+ in many areas.
All testing was performed in Buyers Lab’s European test facility in Wokingham, UK.

In the Buyers Lab evaluation the Canon PRO-4100 large format printer had clear advantages over the HP Z9+ in many areas. It delivered superior image quality, was shown to have lower ink consumption in two out of the three test scenarios, along with faster productivity across the board. For photographic studios as well as those printers producing signs and posters the speed performance of the Canon device makes it the more productive choice.
Image quality from both 44″ printers was as expected of devices primarily designed for photographic and graphic design applications. However, the Canon PRO-4100 demonstrated superior fine line detailing in both highlight and shadow areas, cleaner and crisper fine lines as well as a larger overall colour gamut. The Canon device also proved to have better printhead reliability with no nozzle clogging issues detected when powered off over a weekend. The PRO-4100 offers several features that boost efficiency including a hot-swap ink tank design which allows operators to replace empty inks while the device is still actively printing.
The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-4100 was the stronger performer in this large format printer evaluation with first class photographic image quality combined with the ability to provide faster productivity.
